Arrests on terrorism watch list skyrocketed at border under Biden

Arrests of members of the terrorism watch list have skyrocketed in the US-Mexico border from less than 10 per year under former President Donald Trump to 98 in 2022 under President Biden.

The spike in arrests is also expected to continue, with border authorities having already apprehended 38 people monitoring terrorism in fiscal year 2023, which began Oct. 1. The statistic is just the latest border metric to break records under Biden, who chaired unprecedented levels of illegal immigration.

Data from U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) indicates that there were some 36,000 border encounters in February 2020, Biden’s first full month in office. Biden’s most recent full month in office, December 2022, indicates 251,000 border encounters.

These statistics also don’t tell the whole story, as CBP has also tracked about 1.2 million known “leaks” since Biden took office. CBP defines “getaways” as migrants that border officials could detect but not apprehend.

Biden visited the border for the first time under his presidency in early January, but many border agents argued it was too little, too late. The border crisis has attracted even staunch Democrats like Eric Adams, Mayor of New York to criticize Biden’s handling of the issue.

Adams described the border crisis as a national issue last week and called on Biden and Congress to act. The Northern Governor has been embroiled in the fight against immigration through the bus policies of Texas Governor Greg Abbott, which ferried thousands of migrants to New York.

The Republican argues that the flow of migrants to powerful Democratic cities like New York, Chicago and Washington, DC is the only way to force Democrats to face the realities of the border crisis.

Statistics suggest terrorist organizations are also looking to take advantage of border chaos, with apprehensions on the terror watch list rising from less than 10 a year under former President Donald Trump to 98 in 2022.

The White House has long sought to dismiss the push as an annual event, but historical data shows that the current crisis goes far beyond traditional annual pushes.
