Shadow acquires Android emulation startup Genymobile • TechCrunch

Shadow makes its first acquisition as it announced it would acquire Genymobile, the company behind it Genymotion. Shadow is better known for its cloud computing service which works especially well for cloud gaming. It also offers a cloud storage service based on Nextcloud.

As for Genymobile, the French startup has been around for more than a decade. It has specialized in low-level Android development. And in particular, it has developed a popular Android emulator so that developers can test their apps on multiple configurations and under different scenarios.

The terms of the deal have not been disclosed. Genymobile’s co-founder and CTO Arnaud Dupuis will remain with the company and act as CEO of Genymobile as of March 1. Genymobile’s current CEO, Tim Danford, will step back from the day-to-day operations of the company and move into an advisory role.

“We are very pleased to announce this acquisition as the relationship built with Genymobile over the past year has been critical to our progress in developing the next generation of our service,” Shadow CEO Eric Sèle said in a statement. “This acquisition will provide Shadow with additional expertise and also demonstrates our ambition as a company, which will grow both internally and externally.”

Genymotion started as a desktop emulator for Android development. Businesses could pay a subscription fee to run virtual devices on their computers. More recently, the company has started offering a hosted version of Genymotion emulation. Genymobile takes care of the server infrastructure while you can use your web browser to interact with your app.

Business customers can also use Genymotion to run Android virtual devices on their preferred cloud platform: Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud Platform, Microsoft Azure, Alibaba Cloud, Oracle Cloud or on-premises.

Moving to the cloud means you can use Genymotion for automated testing and trigger those tests with your continuous integration system. For example, every time you create a new build, CircleCI or GitHub Actions can run some tests on Genymotion to make sure your new build doesn’t break anything.

Developers are notified if something is wrong. In addition to Android development, quality assurance teams can use Genymotion to reproduce bugs on specific devices in a specific geographic location.

Shadow has recently been business service for cloud computing. Businesses have access to powerful virtual machines running Windows Server. The service could be useful for game studios, 3D animation companies, and other industries that need powerful GPUs.

With the acquisition of Genymobile, Shadow can provide access to a different type of machine in the cloud, in that case Android devices.
