New Zealand Education Minister Chris Hipkins is set to replace Jacinda Ardern as Prime Minister


Chris Hipkins, New Zealand’s education minister, is set to replace Jacinda Ardern as prime minister, following the shock announcement of her resignation earlier this week.

Hipkins was the only candidate to be nominated for the leadership of the ruling Labor Party, the party said in a statement on Saturday morning.

“The Labor Party caucus will meet at 1 p.m. Sunday to approve the nomination and confirm Chris Hipkins as leader,” Labor party whip Duncan Webb said in the statement.

Ardern said on Thursday she would stand down for a new leader, saying she did not believe she had the energy to seek re-election in October’s election.

Hipkins previously oversaw the handling of the pandemic in New Zealand as Minister for the response to Covid-19 in Ardern’s office.
