The minimum specs for some PC games are getting out of hand

Square Enix's Forspoken requires a LOT of RAM

In recent years, the minimum amount of RAM you need to play the latest games on PC has been somewhere around 8-16 GB. Unless you’re talking about some really weird outliers, both of which are also games from or appearing on the PlayStation 5.

We learned that last month Returna game released on the PS5 in April 2021, would release on PC in 2023 with recommended specs “asking for an eye-popping 32 gigabytes of ram”. 32GB! What the fuck! While that’s just the recommended amount – the minimum is a still hefty 16GB – it certainly stood out not only for the sheer amount it took, but also for the fact that it didn’t quite resemble the kind of game that would, let’s face it, require that much have compared to their peers. But being from the PS5, most people just wrote it off as a result of the game’s development being a weird, console-first quirk and went on with their lives.

However, now the Square Enix has been published The prophesied– a game that’s also coming to the PlayStation 5, but with a PC version alongside it at launch – does much the same thing. It has a minimum of 16 GB of RAM (only to run at 720p! On a PC!), with 24 GB recommended and 32 GB required if you want to run the game on Ultra settings. Return being a port of a PS5 game was one thing, but The prophesied was developed with a PC version launching alongside the console edition, so it doesn’t have that excuse.

This is too much RAM! I bought a brand new gaming PC in 2020 and it came with 16 GB of RAMwhich was fine at the time, maybe even a bit over the top since games always only asked for 8 GB (2022’s Modern Warfare IIjust for comparison, calls for 16 GB to run at Ultra 4K). To have gotten to the point where certain PlayStation-related games (and almost no others!) ask for 16 GB as a minimum is wild, and I’m sorry Return and The prophesiedbut neither of you will force me to buy new hardware to play.

Sony has been doing a pretty good job of bringing its games to PC lately, with everything from Horizon until God of war does well enough to make ports a fundamental part of PlayStation’s release business going forward (The last of uscomes in March for example). However, those are all games released on the PS4, and so with relatively reasonable specs; if this is the amount of RAM needed to bring PS5 games to PC (and I’m not saying definitively isonly that this is now a pattern), then perhaps Sony’s future ports won’t run as smoothly.

Now that we’re on the subject The prophesieda demo was recently released and fan feedback led to some changes being made to the game:
