The Last of Us is HBO’s second-biggest debut show ever, behind House Of The Dragon

The Last of Us on HBO is one of the biggest debut series on the platform, just missing out on the number one spot thanks to House of the Dragon.

The adaptation, which follows Joel and Ellie as they travel across America, drew a whopping 4.7 million viewers in its first episode. It beats Boardwalk Empire, which previously held 2nd place in 2010.

This figure, while impressive, apparently only satisfies 20%-40% of the total gross audience per episode, which means that this figure is sure to rise even higher as more and more people jump on the hype train and watch the show.

House of the Dragon, which still remains the king of HBO debuts even with the excellent first impression of The Last of Us, premiered to nearly ten million viewers. While it clearly had the momentum of Game of Thrones behind it, who knows if The Last of Us could achieve similar numbers if a season two ever happens.

Either way, these great opening numbers for The Last of Us are met with critical acclaim, as well as overwhelming love from many casual viewers who are either revisiting the world created by the games or seeing it for the first time. Whether it can keep onlookers excited remains to be seen, but it’s clear that the show is one of this year’s must-watches.
