Nest Co-Founder Matt Rogers’ New Startup Is Bullshit • TechCrunch

“This is the next 20 years of my life. This isn’t like, build the company in four or five years and sell it to Google. This is a big, long journey.”

Matt Rogers, who co-founded Nest with Tony Fadell in 2010, talked about his new startup and he thinks it’s going to be big. He’s probably right, but it’s also nonsense in a sense.

Today Rogers, co-founder Harry Tannenbaum and the rest of the Mill Industries team are launching their first product. At first glance it doesn’t look like much, maybe a tight bin. That’s not an unfair assessment, but the Mill bucket is much more than just a collection bucket.

Mill’s kitchen bin gobbles up food scraps, dries them out and grinds them into bits overnight. It also neutralizes odors with a carbon filter. When the bin is full, Mill automatically sends a box to return the waste to the farm, where it is cleaned, screened, pasteurized and packaged to be sold to farmers as chicken feed.

The aim is to combat the climate impact of food waste.

“This feels like the most manageable of all climate problems,” Rogers said. “We don’t need to invent nuclear fusion. We don’t have to figure out how to build low-weight jet fuel. It’s like not throwing food in the trash.”
