After Ubisoft recently announced they had wielded the ax in barbarian style, it was believed by many that any hope of the infinitely delayed Beyond good and evil 2 could relax now. Seven games were canned in the past six monthsalong with yet another delay before the besieged Skull bones, while other major titles fell short of expectations. But, Ubisoft points out, for some reason BG&E2 is still being made.
In conversation with EurogamerUbisoft told the site, “Beyond good and evil 2The development of the team is ongoing and the team is working hard to deliver on its ambitious promise.” Which is indeed a very vague statement.
BG&E2 was announced extraordinarily fifteen years ago, and all along thought it was abandoned, then re-announced, forgotten again, given an E3 video that seems to have nothing to do with Beyond good and evildisappeared again, and so on.
Creator Michel Ancel, who was also responsible for creating Raymanwould pop up occasionally to indicate that the game is in a new phase of development, before eventually breaking all over in 2020 to spend more time with its nature reserve – coincidentally just moments before it was revealed that he was being investigated for toxic behavior in his studio.
A lot of the problems with the game’s creation focused on Ancel’s leadership style, according to a report from the French outlet, Release. However, despite his departure more than two years ago, there is not a sliver of footage from unof his new leadership. Ddespite the announcement that former Blizzard writer Sarah Arellano had joined the project in August last yearthere still seemed little reason to believe it happened.
But that’s not the case, says Ubisoft, who we’ve contacted to ask for more details. Although the question we haven’t asked is why? Why bother now? years 2003 Beyond good and evil was a really great game, with a gentle mix of third-person platforming, nature photography and a really nice story. But that was two decades ago, and everything we have seen from the supposed sequel in the years that followed felt strongly tonally different—and mysteriously obsessed with monkeys. Epic and expensive-looking CGI trailers were great to watch, but suggested nothing of the actual game, while the 2018 in-game pre-alpha visuals looked dated and incomprehensibly bland.
It feels to me like that saddest project: a game that exists to exist, without visibility greater motivation to be. As a huge fan of the original game, I once yearned for a sequel, but not anymore. And especially not considering that everything that has been shown of it – is ridiculous Star field—like over-ambition for its f-bomb-filled bullshot CGI videos—has felt like it has nothing to do with the game I loved at all.
Still, it seems extremely unlikely that we’ll ever be affected by its release.
